Supporting black businesses should never go out of style. To end August and kick off September, I checked in with Briunna Outlaw, owner of Sweet Sensations by Bri, to get an inside look into owning a sweets shop.
In your opinion, what is the “Sweet Sensations By Bri” brand?
The brand Sweet Sensations caters to all of your sweet cravings. My treats are highly enjoyable and keep my customers coming back for more. The main item on my menu is chocolate-covered strawberries, which symbolizes “the food of love”. This explains my brand because every item on my menu is made with love and presents the representation of love. I love being able to assist people with demonstrating their love towards others.
What inspired you to start your business?
My mom has a business doing craftwork like welcome signs and wreaths and my grandma owns a fashion boutique in Clarksdale, Ms. I always wanted to start a business just like them, but I never knew exactly what it would be. In May, I was making chocolate-covered strawberries for fun and I posted it on social media. Everyone started asking me was I selling them, and that’s what motivated me to start letting people buy them but I still never thought I would actually start a business. Then my mom and I collaborated for Mother’s Day selling her Mother’s Day boxes and my strawberries on the side. Looking on social media seeing how many people wanted my services is what motivated me to actually start my business.

Describe a typical day for you and your business.
A typical day consists of me working around my work schedule to fulfill orders via text or call in. I would come home from work, freshen up, and work toward fulfilling orders. My main objective is to finish each order within a timely manner and to see a smile on my customers face whenever a delivery or pickup is made.
What makes you different from other dessert shops?
What makes me different from other dessert shops is that I am not limited to the amount of things I can do. I am not afraid to think outside of the box. Some people are stuck on selling your typical chocolate covered items, but I am willing to try anything that is thrown my way.
Where do you see your business in the future?
l would like to have a Sweet Sensations franchise.
